PE Curriculum Intent

At TKS,  we believe the study of Physical Education is important because we want to inspire our students to want to take part in lifelong physical activity.  The study of Physical Education at The Kingsway School will enable our young people to positively contribute to society because we aim to develop and expand on the life skills necessary for any and every success; determination, resilience, motivation, teamwork, self-discipline, communication and respect. We wish for those students who have a true love and passion for our subject to pursue our PE courses and eventually go on to have careers within the sports industry.

The foundations of Physical Education are built on a fundamental understanding of Health and wellbeing and the benefits of taking part in Physical activity.

The core knowledge that learners are expected to acquire in the broad and challenging Physical Education curriculum is a range of skills, tactics and knowledge. Students will be able to  combine complex skills and techniques consistently in a practice and a competitive situation, to outwit an opponent, or to perform in a none competitive situation, explain key technique points for most skills and demonstrate when the correct time to use them in a breadth of sporting and physical activities.

We provide opportunities for pupils to become confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. All pupils will be exposed to activities that will encourage them to engage in life-long physical activity.  We believe in building the essential skills, techniques and strategies to give students the capabilities to perform in a variety of sports; such as: Netball, Trampolining, Dance, Outdoor Adventurous Education, Football, Rounders, Rugby, Badminton, Athletics and many more fantastic sporting activities.

Students will not only develop skills and fitness to apply in sporting contexts such as; strength, speed, agility, balance and coordination but skills that can be applied to the wider world such as; leadership, team work, problem solving, communication, self-worth and dealing with and overcoming adversity to serve them throughout their lives. We want our learners to be: resilient, self-motivated and independent. We will provide a learning environment which allows our students to thrive; to attempt new challenges, improving on old challenges, and failing confidently.

Learners are then expected to apply this knowledge by taking part in a range of sporting and physical activities, where pupils are challenged, engaged and are supported by verbal, written, peer and self assessment. Pupils will also apply their knowledge by not only being athletes and performers but through alternative roles such as coach, analyst, leader and official. We will insist on great sportsmanship and sports etiquette to instil great values to give each student and their experiences a real sense of purpose.

We want our pupils to understand the benefits of regular physical activity on physical, mental and social health but also to gain those benefits by being people who regularly participate. We aim for all pupils to be able to understand the human mind and body works and that looking after it will only help aid in their successes.

Our Physical Education curriculum is aspirational and we provide pupils with a breadth of activities throughout their school learning journey, building on prior knowledge and skills to improve their skill level and understanding progressively. We want students to have endless positive experiences with physical activity and exercise and for them to know what hard work truly feels like. This in turn will develop into a work ethic and be transferrable into all aspects of their lives.

We nurture learners’ curiosity by creating a teaching space where students feel comfortable yet challenged, where they feel a true sense of belonging and where they can discover confidence in their own skills, knowledge and ability. Students are encouraged to answer difficult questions and attempt more complex skills within pracices and competitive situations in an environent that allows pupils to experiment with different tactics, strategies and technique without the fear of failure, but also with the resilience to overcome challenges.

The Physical Education curriculum supports our young people to deepen their understanding of the world around them via the delivery of GCSE PE and OCR Cambridge National - Sports Studies, where pupils will research and learn about various different user groups within sport, the socioeconomic backgrounds or these user groups as well as barriers to participation in sport that they may face. Pupils will regularly discuss up to date contemporary issues within sport that is seen in the media and can be used to start discussions around race, gender, sexual orientation, age and religion.

Beyond our classrooms, we give our students the greatest exposure to cultural capital we can by exposing our students to such a diverse number of sports both within school and outside of school so our students have the opportunity of experiencing the different environments these sports are played in and the different cultures which are adopted by them. We also look to offer trips taking students to watch sporting events; such as Rugby Union, Golf and Football which again adds to the experiences our students have throughout their time at the Kingsway School.
