Transition Class

Despite the fact that the move from primary to secondary school is interesting and exciting, it can present challenges for some children and their families. The changes in lesson structure, size of the school and the need to build new relationships with peers and staff may affect the momentum of some students as they start in Year 7.

At Kingsway we place huge importance on every student's transition journey and are developing innovative transition programmes which are being nationally recognised. This initiative is part of the wider transition strategy and helps us best support the children in our community who may benefit from an adapted transition pathway when they reach Kingsway.

The aim of the transition group is to provide a space which supports greater levels of confidence and protects the momentum generated by the students in the primary schools. We have recognised that some of our students benefit from accessing the full Year 7 curriculum in a space that replicates some of the familiar practice experienced at primary school and we have a specialist member of staff leading the learning in this group.

Entry to the group is carefully monitored and students who access this pathway, must satisfy specific criteria and are only selected following discussions with their current primary school teachers, parents, professional agencies and our Year 7 team. As part of the pathway, each student will have a personal reintegration plan which will map out their journey back towards typical Year 7 timetables and all transition group students will be fully reintroduced by the end of the second term in Year 7.
